Selfie Drones - The New and Innovative Global Trend in the Drone Industry
A new and hotly awaited consumer category which is taking the selfie world by storm is that of the Selfie Drone. Regular selfie sticks have been made obsolete by this new and cool gadget which is basically a small drone that can be tossed in the air, and can take cool shots of you and your friends from different viewing angles. It then drops back into your hand, and folds up to go back into your pocket.
The technology is still relatively recent, therefore some features may not be as robust and reliable as they should be. There are some much mooted models which have been marketed for years but which still have not reached production, such as the Lily Drone and AirSelfie. However plenty of models have made it to the shelves, so here we have compared the top Foldable Selfie Drones currently available.
Some are marketed as selfie cams rather than drones, more selfie stick than remote controlled quadcopter/UAV. They are not toys however, and do require all the complicated technology of their drone counterparts to allow ease of control and stability in the air, in order to take decent quality pictures. This is in contradiction to their size as they are smaller and contain fewer components and sensors, which brings its own issues cramming a lot of technology into a small package. Selfie Drones contain smaller batteries which limits flight time to 5-10 minutes for most models, but you can offset this by buying spares. As small machines, they are also vulnerable to wind and other environmental factors. When you take into account the cost of some of the selfie cams, the functionality of a comparably priced drone such as one from the DJI Phantom series offers better value for money so do consider this when deciding whether to purchase. However, we feel the advantages of the Selfie Drones go a long way to making up for this, particularly if filming your friends or hobbies is one of your aims. Most importantly, they are very portable and easy to keep with you. Many of them fold up to the size of a smart phone, so they are easy to carry and you have more chance of having them on you when a golden photo opportunity presents itself. They are also a lot more discrete than larger drones, and so don't attract too much attention when flying and will allow you get more more "candid" footage!
We feel Selfie Drones are opening up the drone market to a much wider audience, and are attracting a lot of interest. If you want to get ahead of the game and own your own foldable, self-flying photographer, check out our recommendations below.
